Cure for Migraines Might be Heart Surgery?

Is this a case of the cure is worse than the ailment? News reports say that research shows a large proportion of migraines could be due to a hole in the heart that allows blood high in serotonin to get into the brain's blood supply. A possible cure for migraines could be keyhole heart surgery to fix the hole.

I am a migraine sufferer, and I believe this research could be correct. It makes sense after years of experience of having migraines come on suddenly at times of stress, as well as other times. Stress leads to an increased heart rate, and with a hole in the heart, this would lead to increased serotonin levels to the brain. I can buy that.

I'm not sure that I would want to undergo heart surgery to cure my migraines though. Okay, call me a chicken. There are those who suffer migraines much more severe than mine, and I can understand why they would want to risk the surgery to improve quality of life. As it is, when I'm in the midst of a migraine and lying in bed in a darkened room, unable to sleep or move because of the pain, I can't help but think, "This is a day of my life wasted". I've tried medication to prevent the migraines in the first place, but they all make me feel lethargic and dull. I decided it was worse having every day wasted than only the ones when I was having a migraine.

Therefore, I eagerly await the statistics following the trials about to take place. If the statistics show there is very little risk in having the surgery, and if my migraines increase in severity, I might consider having it, should they find I have this hole in my heart. Until then, I will lay in my supplies of Ibuprofen and hope for the best.
