Sometimes I Actually Like Michael Schumacher ...

Now for instance. He is the first Formula One driver to donate towards the tsunami appeal. He's giving $10 million. That's wonderful news, and he has risen in my estimation.

F1Racing.net says this is the largest donation by any sports personality, and it could be the largest donation by any individual. My hat is off to him.

I still hope he gets his butt kicked on the track this year though.

I saw this bit of news a day or two ago. '...could be the largest donation by any individual'? Um, so far as I know, not even Bill Gates, as an individual, has contributed one red cent. Gates's foundation, however, contributed $3M. That's some piddly-assed change compared to Schumacher's donation, especially when you consider just how wealthy Gates is.

Schumacher does make frequent donations to charity, I'll give him that. He might come across as an arrogant sod, but he's generous with his money. Someone I know responded to this news, "Yeah, well he only made this donation after spending $32 million on a house in Italy!" That's just being nasty. I'm SURE he rushed out and bought a house after the tsunami and then said "Oh I've got $10 million left over, I guess they can have it!" I don't think so.

My first thought was of Bill Gates as well. I know Sandra Bullock has donated $1 million, which is great considering she probably doesn't have the same income as Schumacher. George W. Bush has donated $10,000 -- he might be the Prez, but he's no Gates. Even the Queen has made a personal donation, though no details were released other than she made one.

I wasn't only wondering about Bill Gates. I was wondering about the likes of Victoria and David Beckham. They splashed out an outrageous fortune to have their two sons christened. They buy the most daft things, like a real brick and mortar fort or castle for their son Brooklyn so he can play soldier. Whether they announce it or not, I hope they spare some of their splurging money for the victims.
